We will be choosing a book early next week. If you choose a book to use from home, then you can start before next week. Please look through the photos for guidance to complete the project.

Over the past two weeks, the kids have been learning about weight and capacity. We have had so much fun comparing the weight of objects around the classroom by using a balance. We made a "Gallon Robot" last week. In review for our test, the kids built a large Mr. Gallon/Gallon Robot/Gallon Guy at one of our build centers. We discussed the parts (units of capacity) that make up the Gallon Guy: 1 gallon, 4 quarts, 8 pints, and 16 cups. We also compared the Gallon Guy to our own human bodies. Each portion of his body represents a measure of capacity, except his head. The torso represents the gallon which is the biggest part of the body and unit of capacity. The 4 quarts symbolize the arms and legs. This shows that 4 quarts equal a gallon. Two pints are connected to each quart to show that there are eight pints in a gallon. We talked about how the human body has two separate bones in the lower portion of the arms and legs, and compared that to our guy. The last part of the gallon guy are the fingers and toes, which represent cups. The fingers and toes are the smallest portion of the body, as cups are the smallest unit of capacity. Please enjoy the pictures of some of our groups with the Gallon Guy! We had such a fun day celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday! The kids did a great job recreating their favorite book characters! I love seeing the kids' creativity! The kids had such a blast with this (Mrs. Thomas and I did, too!). I absolutely loved this idea, and I can't wait to do it again next year!
What a wonderful week of study on The Polar Express! This is my favorite time of year and one of my favorite units to teach! Mrs. Thomas and I have been very happy with the new additions to the unit, and the kiddos seemed to enjoy them as well. The train car projects turned out so well! Overall, the kids really enjoyed sharing their projects during their presentations. The kids gave us positive feedback on the projects, as well. This was the first time we have assigned a project like this, so I hope it was a good experience for everyone. We had a great time learning some new skills and reviewing previous skills. All of the activities during reading lead up to our main event, watching The Polar Express. The kids were almost as excited as I was to wear their pajamas and get their tickets to "ride" the Polar Express! We also had a visitor, Andy's reindeer Evergreen (you will see my "selfie" with him in the slideshow below). Please enjoy some of the pictures that were taken throughout this week! What a wonderful program to honor the men and women who have served/are serving our country! Mrs. Stafford and the students did a wonderful job. It was such an honor to be in the presence of so many veterans today! Thank you, Veterans! This week, we celebrated Red Ribbon Week and being drug free by dressing up. Each day had a certain theme. I didn't get photos from the first three days, which where sports day, crazy hair day, and duct tape day. We had some fabulous looks on those days. Here are some pictures from Superhero day and Pajama day!
We had a fabulous time at our Halloween party! We enjoyed a yummy snack, making ghosts, playing hot pumpkin, and witch hat ring toss. Thank you to the parents that made our party so special!
I'm sorry I haven't blogged in a while. We have been very busy here in second grade. We have had parent teacher conferences this week and we have had many kiddos out with illnesses. I wanted to snap some pictures during Daily 5 today. I am so proud of all of my kids! They work so hard every day! Please don't forget to come to the PTO Fall Festival, here at the elementary, on Saturday, September 27. Our class basket and project look quite amazing! I have seen many of the baskets and auction items. You will not want to miss this event! Looking at the picture below, can you guess what the 2nd grade project will be? You will have to come to the festival to find out!
What a week! We had an awesome week here in second grade! The sixth week of our reading units is a time to assess the skills that have been learned over the past 5 weeks. It is also a great time to do fun, engaging projects as well! The kids loved picking a state and city to send their letters to. We went an extra step and chose a school in their towns, in hopes of raising our chances with receiving a letter in return. This project is a great way to learn about our community, as well as others. It also gives us a chance to compare and contrast communities in the U.S.A. Through this project, we were able to learn about communities, letter writing, and geography. The kids really loved looking at and reading maps! We can't wait to see who will reply!
